Hallelujah! Illinois Auto Insurance Rates are Down 17.6%!

Studies show that over 20% of drivers are paying too much for their insurance. Illinois drivers are finally getting a little relief as Illinois auto insurance rates plummet 17.6% in 2009.

According to a study recently published by InsuranceRates.com, average six month premium rates are down 17.6% from the beginning of 2009. The new total? Illinois auto insurance rates are now sitting at $724.38, or $1,448.76 per year.

Even with these recent rate decreases (which have made Illinois auto insurance rates the 23rd most affordable in the country) drivers under the age of 19 are still paying nearly twice that much for coverage each year, and twenty-somethings (even those who managed to survive their first five years of driving with their good driving record still intact) are paying $200-300 more each month than the rest of the state!

17.6% is good, but what would you say if we told you it could get better?

If you'd like to save even more on your Illinois auto insurance rates, here's what you've got to do:

1) Stay out of trouble when you're out on the highway. I know, I know, there's almost no way you're going to avoid being involved in a car accident at some point in your life. There are just too many people out there that don't pay nearly enough attention when they're out on the roads! The name of the game is to make sure you don't cause them so you can add a five year good driver discount to your Illinois auto insurance policy.

2) Consider cutting the commute. Did you know that people who are out on the highway during rush hour are much more likely to be involved in an accident than those who travel during off hours or, even better, don't commute at all?

3) Talk to your Illinois auto insurance agent about possible discounts you might be eligible for that you're not taking advantage of. You'd be amazed what can save you money on your auto insurance. For example, your credit rating can do wonderful things to classify you as a "low risk" driver. So can your job, where you live, where you work (especially if your job participates in an insurance discount program) and what kind of car you drive.

4) Take a driver improvement course. No, I'm not saying you need to improve your driving. I'm saying Illinois auto insurance companies absolutely love drivers that are proactive in improving their driving skills, and it's a great way to shave big bucks off your insurance rates. As long as it's voluntary and no court ordered, of course!

By all means, enjoy the fact that your Illinois auto insurance rates are dropping this year. Just don't forget to do a little inquiring while you're enjoying. You might be surprised at what you'll discover when you start digging around, and anything that's going to help you save more on your insurance can only help you out in the long run.
