There's no better time to swing south of border and get a taste of authentic Mexican culture than at Christmas. I'd make the trip solely for a taste of las galletas de Navidad! If you're living in Arizona you're only a hop, skip and a jump away from the border, so this should be an easy trip…right? Put on the brakes partner. Before you decide to hop in your car and head out for an authentic south of the border experience, make sure you take the time to call you Arizona auto insurance.

Why would you need to clear your vacation with your auto insurance company? Well, technically you don't. You're all grown up, you can do whatever you want for the holidays. (Unless you're talking about telling your mother you're not coming home for Christmas, in which case, those words never left my mouth. You're on your own for that one!)

Most Mexican auto insurance providers offer policies that last for days, weeks or months. If you're going to be there longer than 6 months you're going to need to buy a regular policy-but if you're only going over the holidays you probably don't have to worry about it!

If you're going to be driving rather than flying and renting a car, however, you're going to want to make sure your insurance coverage is going to be able to travel with you. I don't know if you knew this or not, but most auto insurance companies don't extend coverage down into Mexico. Not that they're not willing, but most Mexican repair shops aren't willing to wheel and deal in American currency. If you're going to be spending the holiday in Mexico, you're going to need to pick up additional auto insurance to supplement your Arizona insurance policy.

You have two choices when it comes to your holiday auto insurance. You can plan on picking up a policy from a local dealer when you actually get down into Mexico. That's easy enough to do, as long as you can make it through that mess at the border without giving in to the urge to rear end the guy in front of you that keeps talking on his cell phone and ignoring the fact that traffic finally moved another two feet. Trust me, after you've been sitting in traffic for an hour that two feet is pretty important!

Since you probably don't want to leave your vacation finances up to luck, however, you'd be much better off stopping and picking up a policy before you ever leave the States. Talk to your Arizona insurance agent. Trust me, they know how to do this! They should be able to connect you with a short term Mexican auto insurance policy that will get you through your vacation.
