The Reasons California Auto Insurance is so Expensive (and Why No One Ever Told You About It)

There are very few expenses in our lives that we can't live without. We can't live without food. We can't live without water. We can't live without a roof over our heads. And we can't live without auto insurance.

Approximately 33% of California drivers are either uninsured or underinsured.

Okay, maybe we could live without auto insurance. It's not really a necessity, after all. We live without it perfectly well until we turn 16 and pick up that first set of keys. And there are millions of drivers out there that set off down the highway without an insurance card in sight.

So it would probably be more appropriate to say that while you can live without auto insurance in California, you really shouldn't drive without it. Studies show that huge percentages of uninsured drivers get into accidents every year, which is a large part of the reason that auto insurance in California is so high (although most insurance companies won't admit it). 14% of accidents nationwide are caused by uninsured drivers.

Think about those numbers in conjunction with a 33% uninsured rate in California and you understand why insurance companies are anxious to recoup their losses; most California drivers carry uninsured motorist coverage so that when they're involved in an accident with an uninsured driver their insurance company will pick up the tab!

There were over 38 million people living in California in 2008, and the population is still growing.

The number of uninsured drivers in California isn't the only reason that many California auto insurance providers are raising the roof on their rates, although it's definitely a good one. The population is growing. Rapidly. And as the population grows the number of drivers on the roads grow as well.

Again, here it's just a matter of odds and probability. If you're standing in a hall packed full of people, what are the odds that you're going to bump into somebody? If you're standing in that same hallway and somebody comes running through, what are the odds that you're going to end up knocked flat on your back on cold linoleum?

Now apply that philosophy to California's major highways and drivers who feel invincible behind tons of metal and you begin to get the picture.

There are millions of accidents in California every year, and the number of accidents that take place on the roadways affect your insurance quote. Yes, that's right, you do in fact get blamed for the bad driving of people you don't even know when you're living in California, which is why most insurance companies won't tell you the truth about your auto insurance rate. They don't want you to know that they labeled you a risk the minute you walked in the door.

Innocent until proven guilty? Not even close.
