Are Women Better Drivers Than Men? And If They're Not, Why Am I Paying More For My Oregon Auto Insurance Coverage?!?!
Anything you can do I can do better
I can do anything better than you
No you can't
Yes I can
No you can't
Yes I can…
The battle of the sexes has been raging in Oregon since long before anyone

Wait. What?
Most men are willing to admit that the days of refusing to hand over their car keys to their wives, sisters and girlfriends because they couldn't possibly handle being out on the roads are long gone, but they're not willing to line up around the block to swear in blood that the women in their lives are better drivers either. As a matter of fact, most of the men of my acquaintance would say that between their wives and themselves they're the better driver. So why are women paying less for their Oregon auto insurance?
Statistically speaking, when you're talking about accidents and speeding tickets men and women are pretty equally matched. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety doesn't publish all the numbers, but from what I've been able to find there's usually less than 2% difference between men and women overall. So what's the dividing factor between men and women when it comes to auto insurance?
The severity of the accidents. It's a long standing joke that women are far more likely to not be paying enough attention and find themselves caught in easily avoidable fender benders, but it's absolutely true. Of the accidents caused by women, the majority are fender benders or minor accidents. Everyone walked away from these accidents with more annoyance than injury.
Men, on the other hand, like to do it big if they're going to get into a crash. Statistically speaking, of course! Men are almost five times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than women. That's both a tragedy and extremely expensive for the Oregon auto insurance companies picking up the tab. And if they're going to pay more out, you're going to have to put more in. That's just the way it is.
Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean you're doomed to a lifetime of paying astronomical auto insurance rates. Discounts, prudent car shopping and being very, very careful not to turn into a statistic yourself will go a long way toward closing the gap between you and the women in your life.
