As with the other states in America, it is mandatory to have auto insurance in the state of California.  If you intend to drive in California, you must have car insurance.  You will also be required to carry a mandatory level of auto insurance that meets the state's requirements.  If you are caught driving in California without auto insurance, there is a chance that your license may be suspended.  California state law indicates that you must have carry auto insurance that covers a minimum of fifteen thousand dollars for the death or injury of a single person in any accident and thirty thousand dollars for every person involved in that accident.  The minimum amount of coverage for property damage is five thousand dollars.  Of course, your auto insurance policy can cover more than these totals, but these are the minimum amounts.

As with all states, there are several factors that will influence the rates of your auto insurance in California.  When looking for a California insurance policy, you should be aware of what factors will effect your insurance premiums.  Of course, your age is one of the biggest factors that affect your auto insurance rates.  If you are under the age of twenty-five, your rates will be a little higher than that of someone who is over the age of twenty-five unless their driving record is exceptionally bad.  Teenagers, of course, will be the most highly affected age group.  Any time you are a high-risk customer, your auto insurance premiums may sky rocket.  Another factor will be what type of car you drive.  Driving any type of sports car or luxury car will greatly increase the rates of your premium, especially if that car is not paid off.  If you would like to lower the rates of your auto insurance while driving a sporty or expensive car, you may want to invest in an anti-theft device.  This will lower the risk of your car being stolen and most insurance companies will lower your rates because of this.  Unfortunately, the neighborhood that you live in also effects your car insurance rates.  This is mostly unfortunate for those who live in high crime neighborhoods.  If your driving record is riddled with tickets and violations, your insurance premiums will raise.

The best thing you can do for yourself while looking for car insurance in California is shopping.  Shop around the internet to see which insurance company can offer you the most affordable and reliable coverage.  If you do not have access to the internet, you can get quotes from the companies over the phone.  Get quotes from several companies to make sure that you are getting the best coverage for your budget.
