Finding insurance quotes on the internet is easy, but making sure that you get the lowest rate is another story.  To help in finding the lowest rate follow these helpful hints, they could trim hundreds off your insurance quote.

Provide the insurance company with as much detail as possible.  For example marital status, zip code, make and model of car, any safety features of the car (If you don’t know the features your car has contact a local dealer with the VIN number and they can tell you what safety features and accessories that your car has), and annual commuting miles.  If you do not give the details, you may not get all the discounts that you qualify for.  Even something as small, as if your vehicle is parked on the street or in a garage can make a difference.  Auto insurance rates can vary greatly from one company to the next for the exact same coverage.  You can save hundreds of dollars for yourself by comparing quotes between different companies, and do not forget to check with your current company and see if you can negotiate a lower rate.

Raising your deductible is beneficial.  If you can afford to raise your deductible, a higher deductible equals lower premiums.  For example, raising your deductible from two hundred and fifty to five hundred dollars can save as much as one hundred dollars a month in premiums.  If you drive less than forty miles a day on average you may qualify for a low mileage discount with most companies.  If possible carpool or use public transit a couple of days a week in order to put your annul mileage in the range to receive the discount.  Using other types of transportation for vacations, you can also lower your annual mileage.

Switching drivers may help.  The insurance company will ask for the main driver of the vehicle.  For couples compare insurance quotes for each person and put the lower cost driver as the main driver on the policy.  For example if you put a female as the main driver of a truck and a male as the main driver of a mini-van you may get a lower rate.  Teens should also be insured on safer cars such as a sedan, or mini-van, try to avoid putting them on a sports car( make sure to ask the insurance company what class your car falls into your idea of a sports car and that of the insurance company can vary widely).  Also, be sure to let the insurance company know if your teen gets above average grades in school as most companies give a discount for good grades.  Also, adding an anti-theft device will lower rates.  If your car does not have an anti-theft device add one to the car if possible, adding a car alarm or a tracking device can get you a discount from your insurance company since that type of device can reduce the risk of your car being stolen.  You may also want to check with your insurance company and see if they give a discount for taking a certified defensive driving course.
