Car Insurance and Other Perks for Pennsylvania Retirees
|
|
Did you know that Pennsylvania had a special program designed specifically for their retired drivers that cuts the cost of your vehicle registration down to practically nothing? You can hit the highways for $10 a year as long as you're retired and receiving Social Security, SSI payments, retirement benefits or other pensions and annuities, whether you're thirty five or seventy five! There are limits on your income to be considered, however. If you're retired and interested in applying for retired status check out the DMV Fact Sheet to see if you qualify.
It might surprise you to find out that most car insurance providers will happily cut you a break on your car insurance premiums after you retire. Why? One word-commute.
As a retiree, even if you travel often chances are good you still won't be spending as much time on the highways as you did when you were commuting back and forth to work every day-and you'll have the privilege of making sure you're never on the highway during rush hour! Road rage is worst during high volume traffic times. By taking yourself out of the equation you're helping decrease the chances that you'll be involved in an accident.
Your car insurance will love it.
Don't underestimate the importance of taking driver improvement classes after you retire. Studies show that your reflexes, vision and hearing all begin to suffer in middle adulthood, and you want to make sure your car insurance provider knows you're still on top of your game. Not to mention the fact that driver improvement courses look great on your DMV records, no matter what age you happen to be. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (www.dmv.state.pa.us), all of the organizations below provide PennDOT approved mature driver improvement courses:
1. AARP
1-888-227-7669
2. AAA
3. National Safety Council
1-800-459-2556
4. Seniors for Safe Driving
1-800-559-4880
Of course, the best thing you can do to keep your Pennsylvania car insurance premiums down after you retire has almost nothing to do with policy and everything to do with common sense. Wear your seat belt. Purchase a car that is fully equipped with safety features like air bags and anti-lock brakes, and make sure your vehicle has some form of electronic security system (particularly if you live near Philadelphia or other urban center).
Most importantly, follow the rules of the road. When you've got Pennsylvania helping you out, and you're doing everything you can to help yourself out, you'll be surprised at all the benefits retirement can bring!
