Fire Up That Hot Rod and Head On Down the Highway
Cheap Car Insurance for Your Classic Car
|
A good car insurance policy will keep your classic car as safe on the road as it is in your garage.

Think of your car insurance as the invisible bubble you'd like to put your hot rod in to make sure the paint doesn't get scratched, the interior doesn't get scuffed and the dog down the street doesn't decide to make your tires his own personal watering hole. A good insurance policy stands between your car and the huge percentage of the world's population that doesn't share your appreciation for a fine piece of machinery.
Of course, if you spend all your dinero on car insurance you're not going to be able to afford to give your classic car the tender loving care it deserves. That means you want to make sure you get the best deal possible on your coverage…which means you're going to need to know the secrets of shaving hundreds off your premium.

Collector car insurance is available nationwide and can be purchased either directly through a specialty provider or through an independent insurance agent. |
Car insurance companies hate the relative lack of safety features on classic cars. Smaller cars like the Fiat and the Minis don't have the weight to support them in a crash, and crash testing done by the NRMA in Australia discovered that in a frontal crash anyone driving a 1977 Holden Kingswood was five times more likely to be seriously injured than someone driving a current Commodore. The lack of safety features is the major strike against most classic cars when it comes to insurance, which means if a certain driver were to, say, add seat belts and air bags to their classic car their insurance rates would probably drop dramatically.
The good news for classic car drivers when it comes to car insurance is that as a general rule, insurance companies like the classics. They may not have the fine appreciation for its custom lines and the power beneath the hood that you have, but they do appreciate the fact that most classics only come out of the garage on special occasions and that most drivers respect their investment enough not to go flying down the highway with all of the concern of a sixteen year old breaking in his first set of wheels. In fact, despite their lack of safety features driers often find they have an easier time insuring their classic cars than they do finding affordable coverage for their family mini-van.
If your classic car is over 15 to 25 years old you also have the option to purchase collector vehicle insurance through specialty providers. Collector car insurance is a little different from regular auto insurance, and if you're serious about making sure your baby is as safe on the road as she is in your garage collector insurance is probably your best option.
Finding cheap car insurance for your classic car isn't difficult, and you'll rest easier knowing that your baby is in good hands with a strong insurance policy dedicated to keeping it as safe and protected as you do yourself.
