Is Your Dallas Homeowners Insurance Looking Out for Your Video Camera When You're Out of Town?
It's the most wonderful time of the year….for criminals. Think about it! Doors thrown wide open to welcome complete strangers in to holiday parties. Houses left empty for days or even weeks while families get together for Christmas. Not to mention the endless number of full wallets and homes filled with thousands of dollars in gifts. Yes, it's good to be a criminal at Christmas.
You know your Dallas homeowners insurance company has got you covered when you're talking about the contents of your house over Christmas vacation, but what about the contents of your luggage? Who's going to rescue your video camera if it gets swiped out of your car? Who's going to help you stick up for your rights when your cousin's new boyfriend stays for the weekend and cleans out all of your electronics after deciding he can't do one more minute of the family scene and has someplace better to be for New Year's?
Someplace you'll never hear about, because your cousin's known him for all of a month and they've never gotten together off campus.

What will you do if someone helps themselves to your luggage this Christmas?

Laugh all you want, but there's a reason relationships like these are cautionary tales. They happen. All the time. To good people. Christmas crime happens every year, and thieves don't always stop at making off with the Baby Jesus out of the town manger scene. Sometimes they decide to take the contents of your purse, suitcase or shopping bag with them, and you've got to know how to handle it.
There's a chance that your homeowners insurance will continue to protect the valuables you take out of town the way they would valuables left in your car or in your child's dorm room. It's a "home away from home" sort of thing. You don't want to count on that, however. Check with your Dallas homeowners insurance provider to see what their policies are. If you're covered, great! Time to start gearing up for all the rockin' around the Christmas tree you're going to be doing this year.
If you're not covered, however, and you're planning on bringing camcorders, digital cameras, PDAs, Game Boys and your Nintendo Wii along for the ride, you might want to consider buying a travel insurance policy.
Travel insurance is designed to cover your finances if a) your trip gets canceled, b) you miss a flight or a flight is canceled, racking up hotel bills and the cost of a new ticket, c) you or a member of your entourage has to go to hospital and your health insurance doesn't stretch that far (I've been there-it's not pretty) or d) you get robbed. Travel insurance picks up the slack where your Dallas homeowners insurance, auto insurance and airline insurance policies leave off, and it'll go a long way toward making sure you have a holly, jolly Christmas.
