What You Need to Know Before Buying a Homeowners Insurance Policy for Your South Carolina Vacation Home
|

Home of the Peachoid Water Tower, South of the Border (the neon yellow and pink Tijuana) and, of course, the spectacular beauty of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a favorite spot for vacation homeowners. As a matter of fact, if you choose your vacation home carefully you might even be holding the keys to a great second income on top of a fun vacation location. After all, you're not the only one who enjoys spending time on the South Carolina coast!
Whether you're going to be renting your vacation home out or keep it to cater just to you, there are a few things you need to know about being a vacation homeowner-and almost all of them center around your South Carolina homeowners insurance policy!
Finding a high quality home insurance policy for your vacation home at homeowners insurance rates that won't leave you too broke to enjoy your vacation is going to be harder than finding insurance coverage for your primary residence. Since you're not there all the time there's a better chance that your vacation home will suffer damages that will cost your insurance company thousands! Although some homeowners insurance companies offer a separate insurance policy geared exclusively toward vacation homes, most homeowners are going to find it easier on their wallets (and their sanity) to purchase an umbrella policy from the same company that insures their primary residence.
A good umbrella policy purchased through a licensed South Carolina homeowners insurance company will cover your home, your vacation home, your car and your boat under one policy-and by insuring them together you'll be able to save 5-10% right across the board!
Umbrella policies aren't the only way to save money when insuring your vacation home, and when you take into consideration the fact that it's going to cost you quite a bit more to insure your vacation home than your regular home every penny counts. And really, if you're talking about spending your vacation time at that vacation house aren't there better things you could be doing with those pennies?
Empty vacation homes are a prime hunting ground for burglars, so if you're going to be away from your vacation location for most of the year consider investing in a gated community and installing an electronic security system. You also might want to think about renting out the property or bringing in a caretaker to look after your property while you're not there. While this isn't necessarily going to lower your homeowners insurance rates, most South Carolina homeowners insurance companies are much more inclined to insure a home that's occupied than one that isn't (and if you can prove to your insurance company that the local fire department has access to a lake, stream or other major water source from your vacation home, that's just money in the bank).
You're guaranteed to love your South Carolina vacation home, and with a good homeowners insurance policy you can make sure your vacation home loves you back.
